What is lesser horned owl?

The lesser horned owl, also known as the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, is a small species of owl found in Central America and parts of Mexico. They are typically around six inches in height and weigh up to 2.5 ounces.

These owls are easily recognizable due to the small tufts of feathers on their heads that resemble horns. They have brown feathers with white spots and a barred tail.

Lesser horned owls are both diurnal and nocturnal, transitioning their hunting patterns based on availability of prey. They often hunt small mammals, such as rodents and birds, from perches in trees or while in flight.

Although these owls are not considered to be at risk, their habitat is increasingly threatened due to human development. Conservation efforts are being made to protect their habitat in areas such as national parks and protected reserves.
